Encyclopedia > Oehler system

The Oehler system is a system for clarinet keys developed by Oskar Oehler. Oskar Oehler gave up his job as the soloist in the Berlin Philharmonic when he started his own shop. Based on the Mueller system clarinet, he added a tone hole here and there to correct the intonation and acoustics. Major developments including the patent c#, low E-F correction, fork-F/Bb correct and fork Bb correction. Oskar Oehler has three students: F.A. Uebel, Ludwig Warschewski and K.F. Todt. They are all legendary clarinet makers in Germany, except Warschewski who moved to Stockholm and became the solo clarinettist of Stockholm Philharmonic. Warschewski bought semi-finsihed Uebel clarinets and work on the bore and mechanics. His clarinets are used by famous clarinettist like Dieter Kloecker. Uebel clarinets were used by Karl Leister when he first got into Berlin Philharmonic, before he changed to Wurlitzer. Wurlitzer clarinets made before the 70s sounded very much like the Uebels while the bigger bore gives them better intonation. After the 70s, they made some modifications to their design. Wurlitzer clarinets are now used in all German orchestra and set the standard for orchestral clarinet playing. Intended to correct the acoustic deficiencies of the forked notes in the clarinet (B and F), the system has more keys than the Boehm system and is used mostly in Germany and Vienna.
