En del av Oestroidea er alvorlige skadedyr, det gjelder særlig de tre familiene av bremser og gullfluene (Lucilia spp.) i familien spyfluer, som alle angriper husdyr.
På den andre side spiller spyfluene en viktig rolle som nedbrytere av åtsler og noen larver av denne familien kan brukes til å rense infiserte sår (bioterapi).
