Encyclopedia > Off licence

An off licence is a shop that sells alcoholic beverages in the United Kingdom, for consumption off the premises.


The name derives from one particular division of English licensing laws. Restaurants sometimes refer to themselves as fully licenced when they are licenced to sell wines and spirits. Often public houses will also posses an off licence as part of their regular licence, but not always.
