The United States Army Officer Candidate School (OCS) is a school located at Fort Benning, providing training to become a commissioned officer. Officer candidates must be either prior enlisted members of any rank, or they must be civilian college graduates who have completed basic training. Attendance at OCS is one of four possible ways of becoming an US Army officer (the other three being a battlefield commission, the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), or graduation from West Point). The OCS school unit is organizationally designated as 3rd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment. The battalion has four training companies, designated as Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta, each of which can conduct one class at a time. The course of study at OCS is 14 weeks and focuses on military skills, leadership, problem solving, and moral instruction. There are three phases of OCS: basic phase, intermediate phase, and senior phase. Students are referred to as basic, intermediate, and senior officer candidates as their classes advance through the course. All candidates are commissioned as second lieutenants upon graduation.


Historically, OCS was the means by which the US Army could generate large numbers of junior officers during high intensity conflicts such as World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Prior to 1973, there were separate branch-specific OCSes: Ft. Sill had Field Artillery OCS, Ft. Benning had Infantry OCS, etc. Each course was longer because it included extensive branch-specific training. In 1973, OCS was made branch immaterial and was consolidated at Ft. Benning.


Service personnel in reserve components (in reserve or national guard units) can also attend OCS at the rate of one weekend a month. This training does not take place at Fort Benning, but instead takes place at a base near the unit.
