Officer Designate is a term used in the NATO rank scale and it is abbreviated as OF(D). The rank is equivalent to Midshipman in the Royal Navy, to Oberfähnrich and Oberfähnrich zur See in the German Bundeswehr (army)/Luftwaffe (air force) and Deutsche Marine (navy) respectively. In the Portuguese armed forces the rank is designated as "Aspirante-a-oficial" and it is the first rank in the officer corps coming below 2nd lieutenant ("Alferes" in the army and air force) and "Guarda-Marinha" (Naval School graduates) or "Sub-tenente" (temporary officers graduated from civilian universities)in the navy.
