OkeechobeeWaterway (o-kee-CHO-bee) or Cross-Florida Waterway, 155 mi/249 km long, across S central Fla., from Stuart on the Atlantic Ocean to Fort Myers on the Gulf of Mexico.
Its main segments are the St. Lucie Canal, L. Okeechobee, L. Hicpochee, and Caloosahatchee R. The shallow (6 ft/1.8 m) waterway has 4 locks and is used by small commercial and leisure craft.
It is also an outlet for the flood waters of L. Okeechobee.
Okeechobee covers 730 square miles (1,890 km²) and is relatively shallow, with an average depth of only 3 m (9 ft).
The floor of the lake is a limestone basin and the lake varies in depth from 1 to 12 feet (0.3 to 4 meters), its water being somewhat murky due to nutrient-enriched runoff from surrounding farmlands.
The OkeechobeeWaterway was officially opened on March 23, 1937 when a series of boats left Fort Myers, Florida on March 22 and on the next day arrived at Stuart, Florida.
