The station is located under what originally was the swamplands of the upper Neglinnaya river. Afterwards two ancient churches stood here, and their graveyards were excavated during the construction. The station was to be located in the most centre of Moscow, sandwitched between the Hotel Moskva and the STO building (currentely occupied by the state Duma of the Russian Federation), works, in already difficult hydrogeological coditions had to be carried out with extreame care to avoid damage to the foundations of the buildings by an object that would be greater than their volumes combined, at only eight metres of depth. Originally the station was to be bi-vaulted, like many of the London Underground. However even though boring was already 20 metres into the construction, Lazar Kaganovich insisted that the station be trivault, with two exists to the surface. A Duma (ÐÌÑма in Russian) is any of various representative assemblies in modern Russia and Russian history. ...
The works were carried out with mountain type, despite the existance of multiple underground water channels. Compressed air boring was desmissed as the whole underground chamber was sealed with wood. In the underground erection of the station a so-called German method was applied which required first of all the erection of the walls and then the main station vault on top of them. The walls were built along the Moskva Hotel and then lowered into the construction site, simultaneously bracing it from the elemets and the foundations of the massive buildings from further interference, from then foundations of the pylons were constructed, then the pylons themselves. During the concreting of the central hall a great tragedy took place. For a period of continuos rain the water collected into a massive pond on the square above the construction site. In one unconcreted place the vault gave in and the 8 metre thickness of the soil was ripped open and flooded the station along with bits of asphalt. Luckily no one was injured, but the construction was offset by a long period. During the construction of the Northern and Southern vestibules the orders of the Moscow's party comitee was such that the traffic was not to be blocked. To do this, American bridges were built over the pits of future vestibules. The station was triumphantly opened as part of the original launch stage of the Moscow Metro on the 15 May 1935]. The architects, Yuri Revkovskiy, Borov, and Zamskoi used a silvery marble marble of indigo tint from Italy (the only documented case where imported material was used in the Metro). The vault of the central hall is decorated with square caissons. The walls are faced with ceramic tiles. The whole decoration process holds a record: more than three thousand square metres of marble, twenty thousand of plaster and several thousand meteres of tiles as well as lighting and decorations in two weeks. 1935 (MCMXXXV) was a common year starting on Tuesday (link will take you to calendar). ...
The southern vestibule is built was built into the ground floor of the recentely dismatled hotel Moskva, the northern one is built into the building on a corner of Tverskaya and Okhotniy Ryad streets. The facade of the building was compleately redesigned by architect Chechulin and originally containing figures of athletes, for which actors of the Moscow circus modelled, became a tranfer point to Teatralnaya station of the Zamoskovoretskaya Line in 1938. edit Teatralnaya (Russian: ) is a station on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line of the Moscow Metro, named for the nearby Teatralnaya Square, the location of the Bolshoi Theatre. ...

Originally the station was illuminated with floor lamps, with construction of the direct transfer to the Teatralnaya on the 30 December 1944 with two escalators from the centre of the platform, the lamps were replaced by sherical lanterns. The station holds a record of the number of times it was renamed. Planned as Okhotnoryadskaya, it was opened as Okhotniy Ryad. On the 25 Novemer 1955 it was renamed to Imeni Kaganovicha, but in 1957 changed back to Okhotniy Ryad. Yet on the 30 November 1961 it was renamed to Porspek Marksa (the mosaic potrait of Karl Marks survives). Finally on the 5th of June 1990 it was returned to its original name. 1955 (MCMLV) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar. ...
