Added to this notoriety was the leaking of the fact that Grichuk had carried on an affair with competitor Alexander Zhulin, who was married at the time to Maya Usova. Usova and Zhulin eventually divorced, and ironically enough, he paired up with Grichuk on the ice while Usova teamed up with Platov.
