There are several towns which lay rival claims to be the oldest town in Britain: Abingdon, Oxfordshire; Colchester, Essex; and Marazion, Cornwall.
Abingdon is a market town in the Thames Valley in southern England and is one of several places which claim to be Britain's oldest continuously occupied town.
Colchester claims to be Britain's oldest recorded town, on the basis that it is mentioned in passing by Pliny the Elder, the Roman writer, in his Natural History (Historia Naturalis) in 77AD.

Colchester is an historic town in the north of the English county of Essex, with a population of about 160,000.
It is the main town in the borough of Colchester, is one of the towns which claim to be Britain's oldest town (but is the oldest recorded Roman town).
Colchester is the oldest recorded Roman town in England, although it existed as a Celtic settlement before the Roman conquest and there is archaeological evidence of settlement 3,000 years ago.
