Overview

The Firenza was generally seen as one of the mid-level varients of the J platform (the other being the Skyhawk). The Cavalier and Sunbird represented the budget-end, and the Cimarron the luxury end. That said, with the exception of the Cimarron (which cost thousands more), the base prices of the Cavalier, Sunbird, Skyhawk, and Firenza (in order from least to most expensive) were usually separated only by a few hundred dollars. Trim levels for the Firenza included: base, LX, S, SX, GT (1986-1987), LC (1986-1987), LX Brougham (1987 only). For the Firenza Cruiser station wagons, trim levels included: Cruiser (base), Brogham Cruiser, and LX Cruiser (1984-1985). The name "Cruiser" was applied to all Oldsmobile station wagons at the time; this included the mid-size Cutlass Cruiser and full-size Custom Cruiser. Oldsmobile was among the first of GM's divisions to receive a true hardtop in 1949, and it was also the among the first divisions (along with Buick and Cadillac) to receive a wraparound windshield, a trend that eventually all American makes would share at sometime between 1953 and 1964.
Oldsmobile Fiesta (1953) - an ultra-luxurious and expensive convertible based on the 98 ragtop featured distinctive two-tone paint scheme and one of the first automobiles to feature the wraparound windshield that would appear on all Oldsmobiles (as well as Buicks and Cadillacs in 1954 and most other American cars by 1955).
In the 1970s, the mid-size Oldsmobile Cutlass was the division's best-selling model, and for several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it was the best-selling car in America.
