Makarov was born in Udomlia (Tver Oblast) near Moscow in the Soviet Union. He graduated from Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School in 1957, and started working at the Special Design Bureau Number One (which is now RSC Energia) as an engineer, working on the Vostok spacecraft. Oleg Makarov, the Soviet cosmonaut and spacecraft designer who has died aged 70, survived the only occasion on which either the Russians or the Americans had to fire their emergency escape system to escape a rocket failure.
Oleg Grigoryevich Makarov was born in the village of Udomlya, in the Kalinin region near Moscow, and graduated with an engineering degree from a Moscow technical school in 1957.
Makarov then joined a design bureau, where he was involved in developing the control board of the early Vostok spacecraft and then in the design of the Voshkod and Soyuz spacecraft.
