Oncorhynchus is a genus of the family, Salmonidae. The name of the genus is derived from the Greek onkos ("hook") and rynchos (nose") and contains the Pacific salmon and trout species. Fossils of Oncorhynchus document a minimum age of 6 million years for the modern species of Pacific trout and salmon. Pacific salmon usually refers to the Oncorhynchus species. This includes but is not limited to the coho (Onchorhynchus kisutch), steelhead (Onchorhynchus mykiss) and to the cutthroat trout (Onchorhynchus clarki clarki and Onchorhynchus clarki lewisi). Trout is the common name given to a number of species of freshwater fish belonging to the salmon family, Salmonidae.
Most trout are restricted to fresh water, but many, like the steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) – which is the same species as the landlocked rainbow trout – spend their adult life in the ocean and then return to spawn in the streams in which they were hatched.
The cutthroat trout has 14 recognized subspecies (depending on your sources), such as the Lahontan cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki henshawi, Bonneville cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki utah, Colorado River cutthroat trout, Yellowstone cutthroat trout.
