One belief is that there is no 13th floor in the tower, and it is numbered 14 instead (in line with a common building superstition). According to this theory, the floor above the 12th floor is the 14th floor. If there was a extra floor, the lifts will take longer to travel between the neighboring floors, or accelerate, both of which maybe noticed by the riders.
