George Clooney plays Jack Taylor, whose young daughter Maggie is suddenly thrust upon him by his ex wife who is going on honeymoon. He fails to listen to his ex wife's instructions, and as a result both he and Michelle Pfeiffer's character, Melanie Parker, are without child care for the rest of the day. The two dislike each other intensely, but they soon realise they need each other's help if they are to get through the day. Jack is louche and irresponsible, but has integrity in his job, in which he appears committed to expose corruption. Melanie is bitter and determined to go it alone, however she finally realises she can't do it all. The two end up in each others arms after a stressful day, but they both fall fast asleep. They have both learnt from the experience, however. The city of New York is the rainy backdrop to the story, and it steals the show. There are many breathtaking shots of the city in the film.
