Highway 417 as part of the 400-series network

Highway 417 is a 400-Series Highway in Ontario. It is the backbone of the transportation system in the Ottawa region, where it is known as the Queensway (from the Ottawa Road 174 interchange to at least Highway 7). It extends from the Quebec border (near Hawkesbury, where it continues as Autoroute 40) to Arnprior, where it continues as Highway 17. See the Queensway for more detail about Highway 417's Ottawa section. The first sections were constructed through Ottawa in 1971, over the existing alignment of Highway 17, causing a section of Highway 17 to "disappear", although the two sections of Highway 17 are directly linked by Highway 417 (although not multiplexed, that section is signed as "To 17". This comprises most of the Queensway route. East of Ottawa at an interchange known as "the split", Highway 417 is built on a new alignment which bypasses the existing Highway 17. Highway 17 resumes east of "the split", with its short freeway section constituting the rest of the Queensway route, before 1998 provincial downloading threw it into doubt. After 1998 when Highway 17 became Ottawa Regional Road 174, Highway 417 assumed the Trans-Canada Highway designation all the way to its eastern terminus at the Quebec Border. 1971 (MCMLXXI) is a common year starting on Friday (click for link to calendar). ... Highway 417 is often quite congested through Ottawa, but there is no realistic expansion possible and a beltway plan has been only slightly discussed. As of 2005, The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), is in the preliminary planning stages of an extensive upgrade of the infrastructure of the Queensway, along Highway 417 from Highway 416 easterly to Anderson Road. The MTO also plans to further extend the 417 westerly through the Ottawa Valley by twinning and realigning the existing Highway 17 to a four-lane freeway, although no immediate timelines are planned except for the Arnprior-Pembroke section (which should see construction by the end of this decade, at least in part). Trans-Canada Highway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1851 words)
Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway (the southern half of which, Manitoba Provincial Highway 100, is officially part of the Trans-Canada) gives highway drivers a way of bypassing the city completely.
From Truro, the highway continues east for 57 km to New Glasgow (where it links with provincial Highway 106 — that portion of the Trans-Canada running to the ferry terminal at Caribou), and then northeast for another 112 km to the Canso Causeway which crosses the Strait of Canso to Cape Breton Island near Port Hawkesbury.
From the Canso Causeway, the highway continues east for 144 km using the designation of provincial Highway 105 in Cape Breton, until reaching the Marine Atlantic ferry terminal at North Sydney.
