Oodnadatta, South Australia (27°32′S 135°26′E) is located in the heart of the desert 112 m above sea level, 1,011 km north of Adelaide.
Oodnadatta became the end of the railway line from the south in 1890, until the railway was extended to Alice Springs completed in 1928.
Oodnadatta has also recorded the highest reliably measured maximum temperature in Australia of 50.7°C (123.3 F) on 2 January 1960.

It is likely that the Oodnadatta Track, that famous old carriageway from Marree to Marla, predates the arrival of Europeans by tens of thousands of years.
Oodnadatta is probably an adaptation of an Aboriginal word 'utnadata' meaning 'blossom of the mulga'.
Today Oodnadatta is one main street with the Transcontinental Hotel, the General Store and the Pink Roadhouse on one side and the old railway line and the fascinating Railway Museum on the other side.
