Opawa is an inner suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located 2.5 kilometres south-east of the city centre. It is home to local celebrity and known musical talent, Joshua Corn. The Opawa dropped anchor in Diamond Harbour at 10 am on 7 December 1878 and after an Immigration and Health inspection was docked at the Gladstone Pier with the assistance of the Steam Tug Titan.
Opawa was the first of three sister ships to be built for the company by Stephen’s of Glasgow, being registered with Lloyd’s in November 1876; the others were Piako and Wanganui.
Opawa had the reputation of being a good pacemaker and out of a total of more than 20 voyages to New Zealand she accomplished seven in less than 90 days.
