During World War II, Operation Crossword was a series of secret negotiations conducted in Switzerland through Italian intermediaries to arrange a local surrender of German forces in northern Italy. These negotiations upset the Soviets greatly; they accused the western powers of trying to reach a separate peace. The actual surrender in Italy occurred in April, 1945. Some American sources refer to these talks as Sunrise.
