Operation Hastings was an American military operation in the Vietnam War. On July 1, 1966 US Marine General Walt led a joint Marine and ARVN force of 8500 and 3000 troops in a strike in the DMZ. The goal of the operation was to thwart the North Vietnamese 324 B Division's efforts to take control of Quang Tri Province. The mission was a strategic success in terms of driving off the 324 B Division, but the NVA forces successfully withdrew across the DMZ. The ease of NVA movement across the DMZ caused a steady build-up of U.S. Marines near the DMZ from 1966 to 1968. The operation began primarily as a diplomatic signal to impress Hanoi with America's determination, essentially a warning that the violence would escalate until Ho Chi Minh "blinked," and secondly it was intended to bolster the sagging morale of the South Vietnamese.
Operation Attleboro turned out to be the largest series of air mobile operations to date and involved all or elements of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, 25th Division 1st Infantry Division, a brigade of the 4th Division, as well as numerous Army of the Republic of Vietnam and Regional Forces/Popular Forces and Nungs.
In the course of the operation, 5,987 residents of Ben Suc are forcibly evacuated to refugee camps.
