Encyclopedia > Optical fiber connector

An optical fiber connector constitutes a fiber-to-fiber interconnection and aligns the fiber core of two optical fibers. Due to the fast development of optical nets a variety of optical fiber connectors are available. The main difference is in the dimensions and the mechanical grip. Standard connectors are the LC, FC, ST and SC connectors. If the fiber end is angled to reduce back reflections this is usually described by adding APC (Angled Physical contact Connector) to the name. Optical fibers An optical fiber or fibre is a transparent thin fiber, usually made of glass or plastic, for transmitting light. ...

  • FC (Ferrule Connector) has a floating ferrule that provides good mechanical isolation. However, it is screwed into contact which can induce scratches on the fiber.
  • SC connector offers excellent packing density, and its push-pull design resists fiber end face contact damage during connection.

Common types of fiber optic connectors include biconic, D4, ESCON, FC, FDDI, LC, loopback, MTP, MT-RJ, MU, SC, SMA and ST. A ferrule (possibly the Latin diminutive of ferrum iron) is a name for types of metal objects. ... D4 or D-4 can mean: D4 video connector A polyhedral dice commonly referred to as a d4, see 4-sided die A Dublin postcode see Dublin 4 D4 framing standard The D4, a rock band D4, a programming language of the Dataphor system A square on a chess board... ESCON (or Enterprise Systems Connection) is an optical serial interface between IBM mainframe computers and peripheral devices such as storage and tape drives. ... ST or St may stand for: Abbreviation for Street (St. ...

In general the insertion loss should not exceed 0.75 dB and the return should not be higher than -20dB. Typical insertion repeatability, i.e. the difference in insertion loss between one plugging and another, is 0.2 dB.

Fiber optic cable connector - Patent 4696539 (1789 words)
When it is desired to separably connect two fiber optic cable ends, it is necessary to secure the ends of fibers in exact axial alignment with one another, or with the focal point of a lens, in the case of lens-type connectors, in order to achieve maximum signal transmission.
According to the invention, a connector for fiber optic cables comprises a tubular housing and a pair of multi-part termination assemblies.
Between the entry port 31 and the fiber positioning channel 36 is a tapered guideway 34 which diminishes in size from the size of the entry port 31 to the size of the fiber positioning channel 36 formed by the lobes 28.
System for curing epoxy in a fiber optic connector - Patent 5080582 (3394 words)
The system of claim 6 wherein said fiber optic connector includes a ferrule through which the optical fiber extends, and the tube is sized to be removably press-fit over the ferrule about an exposed length of the fiber projecting from a distal end of the ferrule.
The system of claim 17 wherein said fiber optic connector includes a ferrule through which the optical fiber extends, and the tube is sized to be removably press-fit over the ferrule about an exposed length of the fiber projecting from a distal end of the ferrule.
Fiber optic connectors are used to terminate ends of fiber optic cables for mating with complementary connectors or other communications components.
