Oracle is a fictional character, the nom de guerre of a superhero appearing in the publications of DC Comics. Her secret identity is Barbara Gordon, the niece/adopted daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon. She was the original Batgirl until an attempt on her life by in The Killing Joke, a graphic novel by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, when the Joker shot Barbara through the spine. Drawing on her training as a librarian, she now acts as an information broker, gathering and disseminating intelligence to law-enforcement organizations and members of the superhero community. Barbara has no superpowers but is gifted with a genius-level intellect, an eidetic memory, a vast knowledge of computers and electronics, and is an expert hacker. She has even trained herself to engage in combat (usually escrima) from her wheelchair should the need for it arise. The current DC Comics logo, adopted in May 2005. ... Oracle made her one-line debut in Suicide Squad #23 (January 1989) as a mysterious hacker who had invaded the squad's database, and she eventually became a member of the team (under the alias "Amy Beddoes") and the Squad's leader Amanda Waller's second-in-command.
Oracle, along with Batman, is continuing to mentor her and acts as something of a mother figure to her as well.
Oracle continues to be one of the most effective and interesting heroes in the DCU, and the BoP monthly has allowed her to really come into her own.

Through cyberspace, Oracle is connected to virtually every hero on the planet; she is the one true source of information that all heroes have come to rely upon one way or another.
While comics are indeed supposed to simulate real life, both joy and pain, I think DC should have left Barbara Gordon the way she was originally created.
Her role as Oracle is here to stay and she has honorably past down her mantle to the young Cassandra Cain, the third Dark Knight Damsel (who I believe is an exact, not to mention obvious copy of Batman in every way.
