Orange belongs to the Freemove cell phone alliance.
In Australia, the name and brand of the Orange group are used under license by Hutchinson Whampoa. Thus, although equally branded, Orange Australia does not belong to the Orange Group. Note that Orange Australia uses CDMA (Qualcomm's cdmaONE, aka IS-95) cell phone technology, while the rest of the Orange companies use GSM.
Orange UK was originally majority owned by Hutchison Whampoa and was the successor to their short-lived mobile telephone system known as Rabbit introduced in the 1980s.
The present company was formed by France Télécom in 2001 after acquiring Orange UK (which had been acquired by Mannesmann AG, itself purchased by Vodafone shortly after, leading Vodafone to divest Orange) and merging its existing mobile operations into the company.
