It is known by all in the area to be the gathering place for future actors, actresses, writers, dancers, designers and technicians, film directors and editors, composers, and musicians. Many students contract with the Disney Corporation and/or other networks while they are at school as well (see Notable Students and Alumni). School history

The school is also supported by The Orange County High School of the Arts Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the financial support of the school's tuition-free artistic programs, as well as its ongoing expansion plans. With Development staff's input and guidance, the Foundation Board of Directors establishes fund-raising goals, manages long-term strategic planning, implements the school's capital, public relations and marketing campaigns, and oversees funding criteria. Members pay annual dues, serve on fundraising committees, attend the school's activities, and serve as ambassadors to the community-at-large.
Academics A common misconception is that OCHSA focuses only on the arts. This is not entirely true, as OCHSA offers quite rigorous academic classes. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA to continue participating in their art conservatory. OCHSA's 2005 Academic Performance Index (API) score of 856 ranked the school as one of the top five high schools in Orange County and in the top ten percent in California. OCHSA uses a block schedule system, having only three academic classes per day. The three classes students have alternate each day for a total of six classes. Honors classes are offered as well as many Advanced Placement classes including AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Spanish, AP French, AP Literature and Composition, AP Language and Composition, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Art History, AP Studio Art, and AP Music Theory. OCHSA also has a very large and unique selection of electives including but not limited to Piano, Ceramics, Make-Up, Graphic Design, Taekwondo, and Photography. This is education's top prize for an individual school. OCHSA was one of 250 schools nationwide, and was one of only five public schools in Orange County, and one of only 35 schools in the State of California, to receive this award. The Instrumental Music department holds many concerts throughout the year, and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City in spring of 2006. Its Symphony Orchestra, directed by Chris Russell, will be performing in the Sydney Opera House in the Summer of 2008. OCHSA's biggest event is the annual 'Season Finale' which takes place at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, and identifies notable graduating seniors, information about each conservatory, special themed theatrical presentations, and often revivals or medleys of the top shows of that year. For example: the 2006-2007 school year Season Finale has a "Tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber" theme, and also includes a medley of both the junior and senior musical, Working, and the freshmen and sophomore musical, Seussical. For the 2007-2008 school year, the administration has combined Creative Writing and Film and Television to become "Creative Writing & Media". They also plan to combine the dance conservatories and place Production & Design under the "Theatre Arts". This proposal has been met with much resistance from many students and some faculty, with parent & student meetings with the principal and protest plans. "11 Conservatories--Divided But Equal" has been found quoted by many students in the combining conservatories, but also the non-impacted, such as Visual Arts.

The dress code of OCHSA is different than other schools. Whilst the school still requires decency and professionalism, it allows many things that aren't traditionally accepted at other schools such as painted faces, dyed hair, cloaks, masks, costumes, capes, flip flops, or high heels all in the interest of allowing its students to express themselves in their own artistic way. Despite the remarkably diverse racial, political, and theological student body, the campus prides itself with a school-wide ambiance of mutual respect and acceptance for all. OCHSA has at least 3 high school dances a year: Homecoming (despite their lack of sports teams), Winter Formal, and Prom (11&12 only). All of the dances are themed, and expensive in comparison to normal school dances. For the 2006-2007 school year, OCHSA added a "MORP" or "Backwards Prom". The extended hours of OCHSA present a challenge to students. Most students have to practice their specific art after school and still find time to finish their homework. The students have little time to themselves during the week between schoolwork, practicing their arts studies, homework, and traveling long distances to reach home. Especially busy are the students in the rehearsing conservatories and the Production & Design conservatory, which stay after to "tech" all of OCHSA's performances (excluding Creative Writing readings). The location of the school also affects student life. Before shows and performances, students and attendees take advantage of local restaurants in Downtown Santa Ana, such as the Gypsy Den and the local Burger King. Burger King (NYSE: BKC), often abbreviated to BK, is a global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants. ...
Campus OCHSA has a unique campus, including a seven-story office tower with basement formally occupied by a bank. This is evidenced by the former bank's vault, which is still in use as teacher work area, and occasionally an octagonal theater. OCHSA has two on-campus venues. Symphony Hall, a theater which holds most of OCHSA's medium to larger performances. Formerly a historic Church of Christian Science, it has been converted to a Theater. Symphony Hall contains a theatre, a side rehearsal room and separate practice rooms for Instrumental Musicians, a spacious basement and library for the Creative Writers, an audio booth in the back of the house, the "O-Shop" (a student store) and a Balcony overlooking the actual house for the Production and Design students, housing an ETC lighting booth, multiple Source Four followspots, and a few rows of seats for the Production and Design students. There is a plan to expand Symphony Hall through its back parking lot. The other is The Black Box, which holds most of OCHSA's smaller performances. The single-story Technology Building houses, among a few administrative offices, the bulk of the Film & Television department and the computer graphics portion of the Visual Arts department. There are two fully equipped studios, one primarily for live television production, the other for film work. There is also a large computer lab, and a number of individual video editing rooms. The campus's daily student-run news television program, The Art Attack Live, is filmed in the television studio and the adjacent control room. Situated between the main campus and the Technology Building is the "totem pole", a five-story ceramic tower that is covered in tiles depicting pregnant animals. The totem pole was donated to school sometime during the 2000-2001 school year. It easily alludes to a phallus on several levels. At the base of the tower is a ring, the inside is a plant area. The tower used to be a fountain, with water trickling down to its planter base. The fountain hole has been cemented off since the 2003-2004 school year. Because of its obvious phallic allusions, several ideas for senior pranks have revolved around the totem pole, ranging from attaching two beach balls to its base to covering it with a diluted milk and foam mixture and putting crabs in the planter. It's not art unless it's a phallus! Aside from that, it serves as a hangout spot during break times and a loading and unloading zone for students. OCHSA's Annex is a white windowless building with a confusing maze of ramps known as the "cheese maze". The Annex is known as the "Theatre & Dance" portion of the school, as it is home to many dance rooms and vocal rooms.
