The government of Singapore consists of several departments, known as ministries and statutory boards in Singapore. Ministeries are led by a member of the cabinet and deal with state matters that require direct political oversight. The member of the cabinet heading the ministry is known as the minister, who is supported by a junior minister known as the minister of state in Singapore. The administrative management of the ministry is led by a senior civil servant known as a permanent secretary. Singapore is an island state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula and retained its territorial integrity as such even during the period of British colonial rule which officially lasted from 1867 to 1963.
Some have accused the PAP of presiding over a one party state in Singapore, as although other parties are represented in the 94-member Parliament, none have ever formed a government.
Although social conservatism has eased in recent years, political figures maintain that ‘Asian values’ are not compatible with every aspect of liberal democracy and that a balance must be struck if social order is to be maintained for the benefit of both society and the economy.
