Orji Uzor Kalu (b. 21 April1960) has been governor of Abia State in Nigeria since 29 May1999. He is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Kalu was a successful business man before he ventured into the murky waters of Nigerian Politics. He did business both in Nigeria and abroad. In 1999, he battled with the likes of Prince Vincent Ogbulafor (who later became a minister in the presidency and later the National Secretary of the ruling PDP) to win the governorship of Abia state. Jubril Aminu, who recruited and prepared OrjiUzorKalu, when he was only a student at the University of Maidugri as one of the Southern moles of what was then generally known as the “Kaduna Mafia,” and General Ibrahim Babangida, and their ultimate ties to the US government.
OrjiKalu seems to have sensed the enormity of this latest move, and has released a press statement claiming that the government is after him because of his political ambition – to wit: his declared interest in the presidency of Nigeria.
