History

The city is named for James Ormond I, an Anglo-Irish-Scotch sea captain. James Ormond held a commission from King Ferdinand VII of Spain to bring settlers to this part of Florida. He worked for the Scottish Indian trade company of Panton,Leslie and company. His ship was the armed brig Somerset. The city was founded in 1875 under the name New Britain, and incorporated in 1880( at this time it was renamed Ormond; the word "Beach" was added in 1949). The Ormond Hotel, once a well-known local landmark, was built in 1888 and was demolished in 1992. Ferdinand VII (October 14, 1784 - September 29, 1833) was King of Spain from 1813 to 1833. ...
