History

Etymology

Orrell's recorded name has varied over the centuries, in recent times being known as Orrell-in-Makerfield^[7] as Orrell is one of the historic Makerfield Districts. There are records about Orrell which date back to 1212, when its name was 'Horul'. The records show the name changed to Orel in 1292. In 1294 it was known as Orhull and changed again in 1307 to Orul.

Orrell was also the family name of a number of landowners in the area and various branches of the Orrell family held small estates here for centuries. There are records from 1558 showing a William Orrell to be living at Orrell Hall.^[8]

Industrial history

Apart from the numerous coal deposits which gave rise to a flourishing mining industry, there was the cottage industry of nail making in the area^[9]. Another main employer was the Sandbrook Cotton mill where raw cotton was spun into thread and the many women who worked there came home covered in lint. No significant industry is now present in the area, as the area now serves primarily as residential suburb for commuters. This article or section does not cite its references or sources. ...

Post War

Being divided by the the Wigan end of the M58 motorway, the area has developed two unofficial 'centres': the southern section with railway station and Orrell Rugby Union Club's 'Edge Hall Road' ground, and 'Orrell Post', at the northern side of the M58. The original Orrell 'post', signifying a halt on the turnpike road, is still outside The Stag public house on a crossroads. The development of the area has increased rapidly in recent years as people have been attracted by its prime position. The area's proximity to Wigan town centre and its position at a junction of the M6, make it an attractive location from which to commute. St John Rigby Sixth Form College [1] is situated at the northern edge of the Orrell area. St Peters RC High School [2], consistently top of the Wigan schools 'league table'^[10]is located in the area as is Abraham Guest High [3] on the eastern side of the M6.

Communal facilities

Orrell Library [4] is located on the A577 at the northern side of the area. The library is part of the 'Wigan Libraries' network.

To the south of the area is Orrell Water Park ^[11], a disused water storage reservoir, which has now been turned to leisure use and attracts walkers, fishermen and picnickers.

The studio's of Wish FM, local radio for the Wigan and St.Helens area, are located in the area.^[12] on the eastern side of the M6. Wish FM is the local radio station for Wigan and St Helens, broadcasting on 102. ...

Transport

The areas principle road is the A577 linking it with Wigan town centre. The M6 motorway runs north-south through the area. The easily accessible East Lancashire Road and M62 gives easy access to Manchester. The M58 provides the Wigan area with a link to Liverpool ^[13]. It is proposed that the Orrell area (Junction 26 of the M6) be the starting point of the A5225 Wigan bypass road linking the west and east sides of the Borough. Orrell railway station is located at the southern section of the area providing services eastbound to Manchester (passing through Wigan Wallgate) and westbound to Kirkby (passing through Upholland railway station).
