There are at least four meanings of the term Orz:

  • a Japanese emoticon representing a kneeling or bowing person, with the "o" being the head, the "r" being the arms and part of the body, and the "z" being part of the body and the legs. This "stick" figure represents failure and despair. It is also commonly (mis-)used for representing a great admiration for (sometimes with an overtone of sarcasm) someone else's view or action. See Emoticon. Korean emoticon OTL have the same meaning.
  • In the chinese community Orz is used more often as admiration towards one's accomplishment than the meaning of failure.
  • Orz (also written in lower-case as 'orz') is sometimes used as a replacement for the popular humour phrases 'lol' & 'rofl' (Rolling on the floor laughing) as it can also appear as a figure knelt down holding his stomach which can be interpreted as laughter.
  • Leet for the suffix -ers, e.g. haxorz (hackers) / roxorz (rockers).

Orz - definition of Orz in Encyclopedia (400 words)
The Orz language is excessively unorthodox and the translation computers used in the game are not particularly good at deciphering it, having to resort to best-fits (denoted by asterisks) a good deal of the time.
In Star Control II, the Orz displaced the Androsynth, leaving their cities in ruins, who were conducting experiments with other dimensions that allowed them to become visible to the Orz.
The relationship between the Orz and the Arilou is never fully explained, although the Orz often expressed anger at the Arilou for "*jumping in front*".
