Prior to its use as an air base, Osan's site housed an army regiment. Airplanes began to arrive at the base in 1952. Kunsan Air Base, a base of the United States Air Force, is located on the western side of the South Korean peninsula bordered by the Yellow Sea.
The base was first used by the United States in 1945, and from then until 1950, the Army and later the Air Force intermittently operated from Kunsan.
The 354th Tactical Fighter Wing, flying the F-100 Super Sabre, arrived at Kunsan in July 1968, as part of the buildup of forces in Korea in the wake of the seizure of the USS Pueblo by the North Koreans.
