Osiel Cardenas, a suspected leader of a drug cartel (Cartel del Golfo), was arrested on March 14, 2003 in Matamoros, Mexico. He was a mecanic in Matamoros, where he also was selling cocaine, and became a "madrina" -an informant- for the Policía Judicial Federal, he entered the Gulf´s Cartel by helping Chava Gomez -then the capo-, he later took control by killing him. He formed the "Zetas" or Z´s his hit team by hiring the top elite´s mexican army troopers. He is currently directing the Cartel in La Palma-México´s top security prison- where he is prisoner. Osiel Cardenas, 35, is the alleged leader of the Gulf of Mexico cartel and is listed as one of the U.S. Customs Service's "most wanted" criminals.
Cardenas is accused of threatening to kill several U.S. drug and customs agents and has supposedly run a drug smuggling operation for several years that has shipped tons of marijuana and cocaine into the United States.
A year later, Cardenas was indicted by a federal grand jury in Brownsville, Texas, on charges of assaulting a federal police officer and narcotics smuggling.

The arrest of reputed drug cartel leader Osiel Cardenas, nearly a year after the death of a notorious drug lord and the arrest of his brother, could mark the end of an era for the narcotics kingpins who have dominated the nation for two decades.
Cardenas, who allegedly headed an army of 300 hitmen and drug traffickers in the Gulf coast state of Tamaulipas, was so powerful he enlisted dozens of police as bodyguards.
