Born in Königsberg, East Prussia, (modern Kaliningrad, Russia) Hindenburg followed his father into the German Army. Intially, his career went nowhere as Hindenburg was considered by his superiors to be of low intelligence. After his father became Germany's greatest war hero in World War One, Hindenburg's career started to advance thanks to his surname. During the war, Hindenburg who achived the rank of Major acted as his father's liasison officer. After his father became President in 1925, Major von Hindenburg acted as father's aide-de-camp. As his father's closest friend and advisor, Major Hindenburg excercised considerable power behind the scenes as he largely controlled access to the President. In January 1933, Major von Hindenburg, who had long been opposed to his father appointing Adolf Hitler Chancellor was persuaded by Franz von Papen of the merits of his plan to have Hitler serve as Chancellor, but having von Papen control Hitler from behind the scenes as Vice-Chancellor. After his father's death in August 1934, Major von Hindenburg lost all political power. His last important act was a radio broadcast he held on August 18, 1934 where asked the German people to vote for the Yes side in a plebiscite that took place on August 19. The question was whether the German people approved of Hitler merging the offices of President and Chancellor. The Yes vote amounted to 90%. After the plebiscite, Hindenburg was promoted to the rank of Colonel and then faded into obscurity . He died in Bad Harzburg. Hindenburg was born in what was then Posen (now Poznań) on Podgorna street (Podgorna street in Poznan, Poland), located in the Kingdom of Prussia, as the son of the Prussian aristocrat Robert von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg and his wife Luise (born Schwickart).
Hindenburg was victorious in the Battle of Tannenberg (1914) and the 1914 Battle of the Masurian Lakes against the Russian army.
Hindenburg who was a firm monarchist throughout his life, always regarded this episode of his life with considerable embarrassment, and almost from the moment the Kaiser abdicated, Hindenburg insisted that he played no role in the abdication and assigned all of the blame to Groener.

Von Schleicher stayed on, although he and his new commander held opposing views on the role of the army in the times of crisis.
Whereas Groener and von Schleicher were prepared to intervene to bolster the government, von Seekt showed, in the Kapp putsch of March 1920, that in instances involving attacks by the rightwing he was not prepared to be involved.
While initially von Schleicher seemed to support the Weimar republican governments, the economic and political difficulties of the Depression forced him to move to a position where he was responsible for engineering a series of governments with strong central powers based on rule by presidential decree.
