Otaihanga is a small town that forms part of the Kapiti Urban Area on the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is located near Paraparaumu on the south bank of the Waikanae River. It is primarily a residential area, and although farming used to take place in the area, this has ceased as residential developments have been built. Otaihanga is best known for the Southward Car Museum, one of the largest collections of cars in the Southern Hemisphere. This is located near State Highway 1 and the North Island Main Trunkrailway. The Kapiti Coast properties suffered flood damage from the severe storms which hit the region during the first week of January.
Cr Laidlaw said that Greater Wellington will be holding further meetings with the Otaihanga community in due course to discuss other long-term options.
Until this year, when bores where drilled down to pump water up from the aquifiers, water usage has been restricted during the summer months due to lack of rainfall and flow down the Waikanae River.
This photo was taken from the Otaihanga walk bridge, the very day a Drought was about to be declared, November 2005 rainfall was the lowest for 60 years.
Around this area (Otaihanga) is prone to flooding and in recent times, (Oct 1998 and Jan 2005) some homes have had to be evacuated after big storms when the river overflowed it's banks.
