The Hawkesbury sandstone underfoot had given way to shale, which brought a greater variety of vegetation and topography: rock pools for swimming (and Werrong Beach where the NPWS coyly permits "unclad bathing"), gullies of tree ferns, open grassy hills and the shadowy Palm Jungle.
Before strolling down to Otford Station - a short and beautiful walk under large eucalypts lining a quiet side road - we had to partake of a ceremonial end-of-walk treat: apple pie and ice cream from Otford bakery.
As we sat on the grass gorging ourselves, Lizzy and I came to a happy conclusion: blisters and backpacks aside, there's a lot to be said for a coastal walk that ends with apple pie.
