Otomo Sorin (大友 宗麟 Ōtomo Sōrin; 1530-1587), "Fujiwara-no Yoshisige" (藤原 義鎮), or "Otomo Yoshishige" (大友 義鎮) was the eldest son of Otomo Yoshiaki, the lord of Funai. Sorin became the Daimyo of a clan that traced it's roots back even to that of Fujiwara Hidesato, who was the adopted son of Nakahara Chikayoshi. Hidesato was a servant under Minamoto Yoritomo during the Genpei War, and fought alongside him during the battle at Mutsu in 1189. After Hidesato was named "Shugo" of Buzen and Bungo, Hidesato adopted the surname of "Otomo", hence where Yoshishige got his surname. During the year of 1562, Yoshishige adopted the name of "Sambisai Sorin", but best known as "Otomo Sorin". During that same year, the Otomo accepted an alliance with the Amako (who were the enemies of the Mori), against the Mori. The head of the Mori at that time, Môri Takamoto, was assisted by the Shôgun Ashikaga Yoshiteru, which led to a peace treaty between the clans. To prove that there would be peace, Sorin proposed his daughter to be married to the likes of Mori Terumoto, who was the son of Takamoto. This union is not fully known if it ever truly happened. During the year of 1564, Sorin had no choice but to quell a rebellion against the likes of the Akizuki of Chikuzen, due to being soo rebellious. The Otomo then moved against the Ryuzoji of Hizen, which prompted the interference of the Mori. Sorin soon got the news that one very notable vassal under the Otomo, known as Hetsugi Akitsura was noted to be defeated at the Battle of Tatarahama, along with losing the Tachibana Castle in the year of 1569. After Sorin heard of this, he threatended the Buzen foothold, forcing the Mori to retreat. By this time, Sorin was in control of Bungo, most of Buzen, Chikuzen, Chikugo, and influence over Higo and Hizen. The Otomo soon became known as the "Seven-Province Host of the Otomo".
