The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) serves the City of Ottawa which is located in the province of Ontario, within the Country of Canada. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. The OPS was formed in 2001 having evolved from the Ottawa Carleton Regional Police Service following amalgamation of the various components of the new City of Ottawa. It was previously responsible to the Regional Municipality of Ottawa Carleton. The service celebrated its 150th aniversary in 2005 which marked the date of the founding of the original Ottawa Police. The current Ottawa Carleton Regional Police existed from 1995 to 2001. It was created by an amalgamation of police services. These services were: Nepean Police Force, Gloucester Police Force, Vanier Police Force, some Ontario Provincial Police jurisdictions ( Kanata, Osgoode, Manotick and Cumberland) and the original Ottawa Police Force.
