Ciliax was one of the few senior officers who not only believed the Channel dash possible, he was actually enthusiastic about it.
The plan, as Ciliax told his captains and heads of departments on his return from East Prussia, was that Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen should leave Brest on the night of 11 February with an escort of six destroyers.
Ciliax's fleet was now freed from the danger of an early torpedo attack.

Otto Ciliax (30 October 1891 - 12 December 1964) was an admiral in the German Navy.
In February 1942, he commanded Operation Cerberus, better known as "the Channel Dash", when Germany's two battlecruisers, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, one heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and a number of other smaller ships fled from Brest to return to German waters farther from allied bombers.
Ciliax flew his flag from Scharnhorst, which had formerly been commanded by him.
