Outaouais is a region of western Quebec, Canada. Population: 338 491 (2004). It includes the cities of Gatineau (Hull, Aylmer), Montebello, Pontiac, and Maniwaki and is located on the north side of the Ottawa River opposite Canada's capital, Ottawa. It is home to the Gatineau Olympiques, a junior hockey team in the Quebec Junior hockey league. According to the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), the population of the Outaouais region was 323 736 in 2001, or 4.4 percent of the population of Quebec as a whole.
The region's population is growing more rapidly than that of the province: between 1996 and 2001, the Outaouais population grew by 10 705, an increase of 3.4 percent while Quebec grew at a rate of 1.9 percent.
Given the region's manufacturing structure, the softwood lumber dispute with the United States is a major concern for the Outaouais and could put the economy of much of the region at risk, particularly in rural areas.

Within the region it seeks to : sensitize the population on developing country issues, allow citizens in the region to participate in the sustainable development of a developing country and, offer emergency aid in the event of a disaster in a developing country.
Its general objectives are to : promote international exchanges in regional planning; promote international exchanges within socio-economic and cultural spheres; maintain and increase inter-cultural relations; promote activities and projects that facilitate an increase in international exchanges in the region and; successfully undertake projects that contribute to the development of international exchanges in the region.
Solidarité-Sud Outaouais is a non-governmental international solidarity organization that works towards strengthening local community initiatives and to sensitize Outaouais residents of the needs of those in developing countries.
