The Outcast of Redwall centers, initially, around the intertwined fates of a badger and a hawk under the paws of an evil ferret, Swartt Sixclaw. They are prisoners, but they help each other escape, and become fast friends. The hawk, Skarlath, gives the badger the name Sunflash the Mace, for he had no other, to his knowledge. Together, they seek vengeance upon their former ferret captor. In an attack against Swartt, Sunflash crushes his sixclawed paw, rendering it useless and leading Swartt to swear vengeance upon Sunflash. Meanwhile, a young ferret who was abandoned by his caretaker as a babe is discovered in Mossflower Wood. The young ferret is taken in by creatures from Redwall Abbey, christened as Veil, and raised like any other youngbeast. His vermin breeding quickly becomes evident, displayed in ways that cannot be explained away, and he is exiled from Redwall after a (failed) attempt to poison a friar. Having been kicked out of the only home he has ever known, Veil sets out to find his true father. Shortly after, a young mousemaid named Bryony, his adoptive mother, leaves Redwall to track down Veil, who she feels was unjustly punished. In the fictional world of Redwall, Mossflower Woods is a forest surrounding the Abbey of Redwall, known to be frequented by various gangs and vermin lowlifes, with its various streams running through it, including River Moss which was used to sink the fortress Kotir. ... As Swartt has continued his search for Sunflash, he stumbles upon the seaside fortress of Salamandastron. Launching an attack, he is joined by a ferret corsair named Zigu. As the battle rages, Zigu is killed and Swartt takes command of the fallen pirate's army. As the surrounding woodlanders rally to defend the fortress, Swartt is eventually defeated, fleeing from Salamandastron.

Finally, at the pinnacle of Sunflash and Swartt's hunt towards each other, Veil finds his father: Swartt Sixclaw, who abandoned his son earlier as he was tracking Sunflash and Skarlath near Redwall. As the wandering parties meet up, Veil goes against his nature as the son of an evil warlord and sacrifices himself to save Bryony. Sunflash exacts revenge upon Swartt, throwing him off a high cliff.

Sunflash and Bryony return to Redwall Abbey, where Sunflash is reunited with his mother, ancient Bella of Brockhall. They remain at the Abbey peacefully, until Bella's death, at which point Bryony is named Abbess and Sunflash returns to Salamandastron to continue the long, powerful line of badger lords.

Trivia

  • The name Veil is an odd choice for the creatures of Redwall to give to the young ferret, as it's an anagram for evil.

Bella: Give him a name and leave him awhile, Veil may live to be evil and vile. Though I hope my prediction will fail, evil, so vile, will not live in Veil. Redwall is a series of fantasy novels by Brian Jacques, the first of which was released in 1986. ...

  • The end of book one of Outcast of Redwall follows almost word for word from the end of Mossflower.
  • Sunflash appears to be the only badger lord mentioned with no knowledge of metalworking, but is a skilled farmer insted. He is also apparently the only creature with the badgers "berserker" attribute called the "bloodwrath" to ever write poetry.
