Petroleum Development Oman (also PDO) is the national oil exploration and production company of Oman. It accounts for more than 90% of the country's crude-oil production and nearly all of its natural-gas supply. The Company is owned by the Government of Oman (which has a 60% interest), the Royal Dutch/Shell Group (which has a 34% interest), Total (which has a 4% interest) and Partex (which has a 2% interest). The first economic find of oil was made at Yibal in 1962, and the first consignment of oil was exported in 1967.
The company's main offices are in Mina Al Fahal in Muscat. PDO's central base of operations in the interior of Oman is located in Fahud.
PDO also refers to a (partly residential) section of the Omani capital area related to this company.
PDO is the home for many expatriates in Muscat. It features a beach club, which includes pool facilities, a snooker hall, two halls for sports (where many sport classes are taught), a brand new art studio, a language department, a golf course, tennis courts, a skate park, and four food and drink bars, in addition to the beach.
Oman is also one of the participants in the $3.5 billion Dolphin project being led by Dolphin Energy Limited (DEL, a joint-venture between the UAE government, Total, and Occidental Petroleum).
Oman operates a free market economy, but the government continues to be the most important economic actor, both as an employer and as a purchaser of goods and services.
Oman is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and in 1998 declared its accession to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (patents, trademarks and related industrial property) and Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.
Oman LNG has achieved 80% financing, a percentage of project financing which is unprecedented for a development of this nature in the Middle East.
Oman is a leading livestock producer in the Arabian peninsula with around 240,260 sheep, 854,060 goats, 213,120 cattle and 98,550 camels.
Oman has never had a policy of importing date palms and is now keeping a close watch on the palms in areas near the border to prevent the infestation of this destructive parasite.
