late Professor Pabitra Kumar Sen obtained his doctoral degree from the Imperial Collge, London in 1920's and served as plant physiologist and horticulturist under the British India government during 1930's in Sabore, Bihar, India. Professor Sen was the Khaira Professor of Calcutta University, founder of College of Agriculture, Calcutta University in 1950's - he was invited by Syama Prasad Mookerjee [1] to start the college. Professor Sen was born in Comilla in Bangladesh in 1906, he was greatly influenced by Gandhi and Tagore and worked on village reconstruction in Santiniketan during 1940's. He founded Seva-Bharati [2], at village Kapgari, Midnapur, West Bengal in 1948. Seva-Bharati is an experiment of applying education to elevate the living conditions of very poor and backward. Professor Sen started with one of the most poor village in India, changed its environment to an agricultural success, school, college, research station, health service, transport, education and information technology. Today Seva-Bharati is an instance of how education can influence the life of poor village dwellers in a very poor society. Seva-Bharati offers education that works for grass root village societies. Seva-Bharati is poised to give leadership to other similar socieities.
