The Padma Shri was originally established, in January 1954, as the "Tisra Varg" or "Third Class" of a three-class "Padma Vibhushan" award.
Obverse: The badge specified in January 1955 was to be a "mainly circular" 1-3/16 inch toned bronze badge with geometrical patterns and, in the center, a lotus flower with five major petals embossed in white gold.
