Pagan Island is an island of the Northern Mariana Islands chain, located at 18.10° N 145.76° E (http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params=18.10_N_145.76_E_), approximately 320 kilometers north of Saipan. Pagan consists of two volcanoes joined by a narrow strip of land. It was inhabited during historical times, but a 1981 eruption forced the evacuation of its inhabitants. The 2000 census reports no residents. Pagan, Northern Marianas, a Close-Up Look at an Active Volcano (1158 words)
Pagan is a volcanic island located 173 nautical miles north of Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.
Pagan experienced a major volcanic eruption in 1981, when Mt. Pagan in the north exploded with a glowing avalanche that fortunately flowed away from the small village of almost 60 people located south of the volcano.
The cinder cone is composed of scoria fragments.
