The PaK 38 was first used by the German forces in World War II on April 1940. When the Germans were faced against Russian tanks 1941, the PaK 38 was equipped with tungsten core shells, Panzergranate 40, to pierce the armor of the T-34 and KV-1. In 1942, supply of tungsten ran out and thus the PaK 38 had lost much of its effectiveness as an anti-tank weapon. Although it was replaced by more powerful weapons, it remained in service with the German infantry until the end of the war.
