Human Male Paladin as seen in the World of Warcraft.
Human Male Paladin as seen in the World of Warcraft.

The Paladin is a mix of a spell caster and a melee fighter. Their main role is that of a secondary tank, secondary healer, and buffer. They can remove debuffs well and some paladins have efficient damage capabilities. They have an assortment of spells, auras, blessing and undead specific spells which they can use. Paladins work great against undead and demonic monsters. Due to balance issues, Paladin spells that work against monster type Undead, do not work on players of the undead race the Forsaken which is classified as humanoid. Overview

The Paladin is a melee hybrid class currently only available to the Human and the Dwarf races of the Alliance, but will become available to the Draenei in the upcoming expansion, The Burning Crusade. The class is essentially a combination of a Priest and a Warrior. Paladins are the Alliance counterpart of the Horde Shaman, though they are more focused on melee combat than the shamans. They have a strong combination of Mail (plate armor after 40th level), healing spells, invulnerability spells, auras and blessings. Paladins are therefore one of the most durable classes, if not the most durable, in World of Warcraft. They have low damage compared to other classes, but some retribution paladins and well-geared holy paladins can do nice damage making their class excel in many roles. Some players feel that even after the patch revisions the Paladin's effectiveness is still lacking. Others believe that players who are dissatisfied are trying to use their paladin in a role it was never intended to fill (i.e., high damage output or sustainable tanking). Still others believe that players are expecting the World of Warcraft paladin to play like paladins in other games and are disappointed as a consequence. Blizzard representatives have stated that the developers are happy with the paladin now and do not intend to make any drastic changes to the class in the future. However, the mass changes to the Paladin class has lead the majority of non-Paladin players to believe they are overpowered, leading some gamers to harbour a deep resentment toward them.

The paladin is arguably the most controversial class in World of Warcraft. A thorough investigation reveals a far more complex class than is apparent on the surface—a class that is easy to play but difficult to play well. For example, a paladin, unlike other classes, has a need for virtually every attribute, rather than just the one or two many classes focus on (i.e., stamina and agility for the Rogue). This can make aquiring gear a bit trickier, especially at lower levels, as it necessitates a balance across all pieces. The paladin talent trees are deceptively complex and sometimes require radically different equipment and playstyles.

The Paladin was first conceived by Archbishop Alonsus Faol of Northshire Abbey. Faol felt that the war effort put in by pure clerics during the First Great War was not going to be sufficient enough for the battles ahead. Faol decided to create a more versatile cleric that didn't need protection in combat. Faol's apprentice Uther the Lightbringer became the first Paladin. Uther used his natural leadership skills to rally the best knights of Azeroth to be blessed as Paladins and formed the Knights of the Silver Hand. During his later life Uther trained Prince Arthas as a Paladin. However, Arthas was corrupted by the Scourge and ultimately abandoned the way of the Paladin, killing his father the King and betraying the Alliance to the Scourge. Uther became possessor of the late King's ashes placed in a special magical Urn, but was killed by Arthas in order to take the urn. This led directly to the collapse of the Silver Hand and the Paladins became scattered. They can now be found fighting under any Alliance flag. Paladins undergo fierce training and only the most loyal and determined can walk down the path that Uther did. A Draenei paladin, fighting in the ruined land of Hellfire Peninsula.

The Draenei paladins have their origins in the mythic Naaru, celestial energy beings that saved Velen and his renegade eredar and helped them flee the world of Argus. Eventually, the Draenei reached Draenor, where they settled for many thousands of years. Eventually, however, the Burning Legion discovered the Draenei, and enslaved the orcish clans. Following up on that, Kil'Jaeden unleashed the clans upon the Draenei, slaughtering more than eighty percent of their race. The Draenei that survived fled Draenor aboard their dimensional ship. However, the ship was sabotaged by the Blood Elves somehow, and crashlanded in the Azuremyst Isles. Since then, the Draenei have come to find their place in the Alliance, sharing the belief in the Holy Light of Creation that the paladins venerate. Image File history File links A_Draenei. ... Warcraft roots

In Warcraft II, Paladins were upgraded Knights who had abilities similar to the first game's Clerics. These upgraded Knights had the following three abilities: Holy Vision, Healing, and Exorcism. Uther Lightbringer and Lothar were Paladins in the game. The Paladin returned in Warcraft III as a hero unit and featured five of the World of Warcraft class's core abilities: healing, damage to undead, an invulnerability shield, and resurrection. Unlike World of Warcraft, the Paladin's healing and damage to undead spells were combined into one spell, called Holy Light (the same title as the WoW Paladin's larger healing spell). Strengths

  • Can wear the heaviest of armor (plate)
  • Incredibly efficient healing abilities - "healadins" consistently outheal druids and priests due to a near inexhaustible mana pool
  • Can resurrect other players
  • Auras can benefit the Paladin and party members, making the Paladin a useful addition to any party
  • Invulnerability and physical damage immunity shields, the latter of which can be cast on other players
  • Anti-wipe skills, Divine Intervention (kills the Paladin to erect a shield around another player for 3 minutes; unfortunately, the affected player can't move or attack) and Lay on Hands (instantly heals a player an ammount equal to the Paladin's maximum health at the cost of 100% of the Paladin's mana - higher levels restore a set amount of mana)
  • Purify/Cleanse (ability to remove nearly any debuff except curses)
  • Healing causes less "aggro" to paladin than other healing classes
  • Free, unique mount at level 40 (through a quest); at level 60, another unique mount is available (but it is not free)

In film editing, a wipe is a gradual spatial transition from one image to another. ... Aggro ag·gro Colloquial spelling: Agro English Noun Definition 1. ...

Weaknesses

  • Deals less damage than other classes (especially at higher levels)
  • Many chance-based damage abilities
  • Few ranged attacks
