The Palar is a river of southern India. It rises in Kolar district of Karnataka state, and flows 295 km (183 miles) southeast through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, emptying into the Bay of Bengal south of Chennai near Sadras. The cities of Arcot, Vellore, Kanchipuram, and Chingleput (Chengalpattu) are located on the Palar River. Its chief tributaries are the Ponnai and Cheyyar rivers.
