History

The airline was established on 1 January 1995 and started operations in June 1997 with a series of charter flights carrying pilgrims to Jeddah. The flights were originally to operate from Gaza, but due to an Israeli ban, the services operated from Port Said, in northern Egypt. Scheduled services began on 23 July 1997, operating from El Arish to Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Palestinian Airlines transferred its base to Gaza following the opening of the airport in November 1998. The airline was grounded in October 2000 following violence in the region and was forced to move to El Arish in December 2001, where it operated limited services. It is wholly owned by the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian Airlines was founded in July 1994 by the Palestinian Authority with the objective of restoring air services to the population of the Palestinian Territories after a hiatus that lasted for almost 3 decades.
The airline continued operating out of Egypt ad-hoc flights and scheduled flights between Al-Arish (in Sinai, close to the border with Palestine) and Amman until GZA was inaugurated on November 24th 1998.
On September 2nd 2003, Palestinian Airlines was able to resume thrice-weekly flights from El Arish to Amman using the Dash-8s while the Fokker F50s were undergoing repair in the Netherlands.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- The incoming Palestinian Airlines plane was 15 minutes from touchdown when Israel abruptly closed the Gaza Strip airport last week, forcing the plane to divert to neighboring Egypt.
However, the Palestinians claim the measures are a collective punishment that squeezes them economically, pressures them politically and keeps them from trading, traveling or working.
Fayez Zaidan, the frustrated chairman of Palestinian Airline, likened the Palestinian plane's forced turnaround to a hijacking.
