A peculiar note about this particular unit was/is that the top battery inserts backwards, as the plus sign on the battery needs to be pointing toward the units battery compartments spring, however the bottom battery inserts the usual way with the plus on the battery pointing away from the spring in the battery compartment.

A technical note on this unit and many other 8MB Palm units manufactured at around the same time frame is that the first manufactured units specifically the Palm IIIc, IIIxe, and Vx manufactured between October 1999 through May 2000 had a DRAM defect that could wipe out any data at any time by way of a fatal alert or error. For more infomation and a patch to fix this problem & a test to see if yours in affected please use this link: http://www.palm.com/us/support/dram/

Also the IIIxe specific unit is known at times to display a common flashing Palm logo screen on a reset of the unit where the only way to recover is to do a hard reset and restore from a Palm Desktop backup from the users local, work or networked Desktop machines where the units last and most recent contents were backed up. Currently there is no known fix for this except to try and exchange the unit where you bought it with another one hoping the new unit that you have received does not have this known defect or problem.
