Palm Springs is a city located in Riverside County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 42,807. It is noted as a desert resort, approximately 110 miles east of Los Angeles. Palm Springs' resort features include some of the most famous golf courses in the country. It is one of eight adjacent cities that make up the Palm Springs area.


Geography

Palm Springs is located at 33°49'26" North, 116°31'49" West (33.823990, -116.530339)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 246.3 km˛ (95.1 mi˛). 244.1 km˛ (94.2 mi˛) of it is land and 2.2 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.


Demographics

As of the 2000 census2, there are 42,807 people, 20,516 households, and 9,457 families residing in the city. The population density is 175.4/km˛ (454.2/mi˛). There are 30,823 housing units at an average density of 126.3/km˛ (327.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 78.33% White, 3.93% African American, 0.94% Native American, 3.83% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 9.78% from other races, and 3.06% from two or more races. 23.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 20,516 households out of which 16.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.0% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.9% are non-families. 41.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.88.


In the city the population is spread out with 17.0% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $35,973, and the median income for a family is $45,318. Males have a median income of $33,999 versus $27,461 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,957. 15.1% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Wellwood Murray, of nearby Banning, opened Palm Springs' first hotel, called the Palm Springs Hotel, which was conveniently located directly across the road from the Indian bathhouse where his guests could take advantage of its warm, curative waters.

The Palm Springs Follies stage-show spectacular brings one of the last of the authentic vaudeville shows still presented in the United States; one of the unique aspects of the show is that all of the performers are over the age of 55.
