Palpation is typically used for thoracic and abdominal examinations, but can also be used to diagnose edema and to measure the pulse. It is used by veterinarians to check animals for pregnancy, and by midwives to determine the position of a fetus. ................................................................................................Palpation is used by various doctors such as Chiropractors, doctors of osteopathic medicine, physical therapists, and massage therapists, to asses the texture of a patient's tissue (such as swelling or muscle tone), assess range and quality of joint motion, and assess tenderness through tissue deformation (e.g. provoking pain with pressure or stretching). The scientific literature has shown that motion palpation is often unreliable between practitioners. In contrast, manual tests that provoke or relieve pain have been shown to be more reliable. soft tissue motion palpation | Warren Hammer,MS,DC,DABCO (543 words)
One of the tenets of spinal motion palpation is to determine the direction of the barrier to decide the direction of the adjustment.
Either a superficial or deep contact, depending on your palpation for the restriction, is taken in the direction of the barrier.
Palpation of this area usually reveals a barrier in a variety of directions.
BioMed Central | Full text | An investigation into the validity of cervical spine motion palpation using subjects with ... (3726 words)
Consequently, active range-of-motion is used to evaluate global restrictions in cervical spine movement; provocative palpation tests of connective tissues and zygapophyseal joints to elicit pain from inflamed or damaged tissues; spinal stiffness tests to measure segmental motion; and intervertebral motion palpation to assess intersegmental dysfunction in terms of quantity and quality of intersegmental movement [16].
The purpose of this study is to investigate the validity of motion palpation of the cervical spine in subjects with congenital block vertebrae.
Palpation of the two patients with C2-3 CBV indicated substantial agreement (K = 0.756), whilst moderate agreement (K = 0.460) was indicated in the subject with the C5-6 block.
