Panhandle is a town located in Carson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,589. It is the county seat of Carson County6.

Panhandle is located at 35°20'51" North, 101°22'55" West (35.347409, -101.381997)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 km˛ (2.1 mi˛). 5.5 km˛ (2.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,589 people, 945 households, and 719 families residing in the town. The population density is 469.3/km˛ (1,216.6/mi˛). There are 1,014 housing units at an average density of 183.8/km˛ (476.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 93.16% White, 0.66% African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.86% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 8.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 945 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the town the population is spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $41,686, and the median income for a family is $50,735. Males have a median income of $38,155 versus $25,329 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,640. 6.7% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The Texas Panhandle is a region of the state of Texas consisting of the northernmost 26 counties in the state.
The panhandle is a rectangular area bordered by the state of New Mexico to the west and the state of Oklahoma to the north and east.
Because the Act of Admission of Texas into the Union allows the state to divide itself, a bill was introduced to the Texas legislature in 1915 in order to create a State of Jefferson, made up of the Texas Panhandle.
